Founded in 2019, Vermeulen Flower Farm is a family-run farm located in Canning, Nova Scotia. We focus on producing specialty crops and currently grow more than three hundred types of unique or unusual flowers.

Our flowers reflect the seasons of Nova Scotia, from cheerful ranunculus in the spring to a rainbow of dahlias in the fall.

We cut fresh flowers daily from late April until October and only sell what we produce ourselves or forage at our farm. When we don’t have fresh flowers, we rely on the flowers we dried after harvest to supply our customers with locally grown blooms. After the flowers are done blooming in the fall, we clean up the field and start planning the next season’s crop. We begin seeding in the late Winter and then start planting out for the following year all over again.

Meet the farmers

Lindsey Vermeulen

I started growing flowers when I was on leave after having our daughter. Initially I wanted to grow flowers for the pollinators in our garden and my passion for flowers grew from there. The first flowers I grew were from saved zinnia seeds in our backyard vegetable garden, which quickly turned into the whole garden and then a field. Now we grow an array of flowers at our farm and we supply florists throughout Nova Scotia.

I love the challenge of figuring out how to make everything work together and finding new varieties for our customers to enjoy. I spend my time planning the crop for the year, taking orders, and working with our amazing team, which includes our two children most of the time.

We farm for our kids, and together with our family, we produce flowers that we’re proud to see in your homes and at your special occasions.

Ben Vermeulen

Ben farmed with his family growing up and is responsible for all things growing-related at the farm. His lifetime of experience ensures we have good production and the best quality flowers.

Freshly-cut blooms

We cut fresh flowers daily and place them directly into water before taking them inside to process. All of our flowers are stored in our cooler to ensure the flowers we provide are fresh and long-lasting.

Our flower fields

Our fields are tucked in alongside our family fruit and vegetable farm at the foot of the mountain in the Annapolis Valley. Our location in the valley and near the Bay of Fundy allows us to have a long, warm growing season. We grow on just under an acre and have some of our frost-sensitive plants growing under protection in a covered growing tunnel.

We grow mainly annuals which we start in the greenhouse before planting them in the field in late Spring. We also have Spring bulbs and perennials that start our season off including ranunculus, tulips, peonies, and anemones.
